In Which Platinum Gen Changed Everything: Part Three

PART THREE: Paving the way for Colourful Era

I still think the Platinum Era members of Momusu had it tough and it’s only now that people are realizing how amazing that group became. During promotions for their 20th anniversary, Shige said that if people were going to praise the members of that time, she wishes they would have done it back then. As Takahashi pointed out, “No one called it ‘Platinum’ at that time!” One of the most frustrating things they heard back then was, “What is Morning Musume up to nowadays?”

There were many factors contributing to their lack of popularity in Japan, but one of the major ones I cited was the appearance of AKB48. They were younger, newer, they were more accessible (at the time) and they had the variety emphasis Momusu no longer had. Momusu had to figure out what it wanted to be in the bridge period between the Golden Era and whatever they were to become. I think people generally agree that their Golden Era ended when Yossy graduated, but the usual transition was interrupted by Fujimoto Miki unexpectedly resigning to be with the man she eventually married (“Shoujiiiiii!”). Until Tsunku could find our ninth generation, Momusu had to recreate itself without their senpai to help.

One of the main things I kept seeing in blogs was ranting about ‘stagnation’ and it still bothers me. For a period of such immense changes, people didn’t seem to see anything but the lack of auditions and reliance on the same types of songs for each new release. I’m going to try and explain why I feel they didn’t stagnate; in fact, I think their development raised the bar for future generations and paved the way for the Colourful Era.

In Which Isilie Reviews 2015: Triple-A-Sides all around!

tumblr_nv56opi5r31u3sw5uo1_1280I know I didn’t post much this year…again. And I apologize for that. Real life took up a lot of time and a game series called Dynasty Warriors (full disclosure). Plus the excessive amount of triple-a-sides for every group, every release, overwhelmed me a little. There’s still a forth-coming post about Imasugu Tobikumo Yuuki…

Anyway, usually at the end of the year I post about everything that I liked , or interesting things I saw during the year around H!P. It’s an Itsumo Genki tradition and even if no one reads this anymore, I still feel I have to write one or the year can’t really end.

I’ve gotten more and more sick of my own format though. Especially since I don’t post as often anymore, it doesn’t make sense to really call it a review of the year. I can’t think of much of anything that I covered, except, of course, for Momusu. So, let’s keep the title, for old times sake.

Here is what I loved and didn’t love in 2015.

(Just a heads up: I have nothing to say about C-ute or Country Girls, for various reasons, none of which mean that I hate them. I didn’t invest much time in C-ute and Country Musume has yet to bleep my radar. Plus, Momo still frightens me.)

In Which the Inevitable Still Smarts.

2da824ee28b817a225f8c9580865d52fSo, as most people who are, or used to be, fans of H!P have already heard, Tsunku stepped down, or “graduated” from being a producer way back in 2014, after Momusu went to New York. We are only now hearing about it because (I think) of Tsunku’s book. He confesses that he’d quietly stepped down after that concert, no trademark mid-concert announcement or any sort of fanfare.

I suppose it’s been fairly obvious with the amount of non-tsunku songs lately and the lack of “produced by Tsunku” stamps on productions.

The reaction seems to be a resounding ‘meh’, at least from the blogs or discussions I’ve read. People don’t seem to care much because so many have rage-quit or lost interest in the past few years. While they are sorry about Tsunku’s suffering, they seem to feel it’s a good decision and a long time coming.

*sigh* I hate moments like this.

Giving Tsunku his Due

5564-xzbs1g3z1dBy now everybody in this fandom is aware that Tsunku has cancer and is undergoing treatment. Honestly, other than to use him as an ill-advised scape-goat (a bit of blogging laziness on my part), I don’t really think about Tsunku. And now I am.

When I heard about his illness, it was another one of those moments in my life where I simply couldn’t believe it. I think I’ll always feel about cancer the way I felt about it when it affected my life for the first time: it’s unreal.

So what happens if Tsunku isn’t able to continue H!P? I keep thinking about this and about whether or not he’ll lose his voice.

And the fact that he’s got two young children, who probably have no idea what this means.

*Disclaimer: This is a bit stream-of-consciousness. Don’t know what I was going for here, just wanted to talk about it.
