And so we come to our final day in the lovely Alo Hello Week. I thought I’d end off with my favourite of all the alo-hellos (that I’ve seen so far anyway): Morning Musume’s Alo Hello 2. If I could, I would just set up this whole dvd for you to watch, because it’s that good. At first it’s the usual pool party, water-slide nonsense fun (and there are so many moments from there you need to see), but then the second day turns into a cross Hawaii adventure.
As you well know, Yoshizawa Hitomi is my favourite Musume and Niigaki Risa became very dear to me – so when they were paired up for this dvd, I had no choice but to love it and cap the hell out of it.
Their mission is just to get back to ‘base’ before the other teams do. On the way, there are landmarks they need to visit and they need to buy the obligatory souvenirs. Each team is driven to an undisclosed location and given an envelope with clues,
shoddy-looking maps and other info they might need. Fujimoto Miki acts as the ‘base’ and stays in communication with everybody so they don’t get too lost.
The staff isn’t allowed to help them here. They have to rely on each other and their
terrible English skills to get them home. They have a camera, $150 and a time limit.
Yossy, being leader at the time, seems to know that she’s lucked out getting Niigaki.
Right away she opens their envelope to check things out, looking at the map and busily counting the money.
Yossy pretty much just mumbles and looks disinterestedly over Mame’s shoulder.
Then suggests nap-time.
What can Mame do? Yossy has spoken.
Besides, she’s already asleep.
Once they get close enough to their location they have to close their eyes. When they can open them again, Yossy and Mame discover that they’ve been driven to what looks like a cemetery.
And that freaks Mame out.
Mame is so terrified. And Yossy’s just peering around thinking, “Man, this place is huge. This is gonna take forever!”
Info: They are at a replica (reconstruction?) of the temple Ryuuguujou. So it’s not exactly a cemetery.
But Mame is still freaked out by every sound she hears.
Y: “I wonder where the food is around here.”
Turns out the sound Mame heard was this giant bell that visitors are allowed to…well, ring.
So they both take a turn.
Yossy’s really into this.
She just keeps ringing that bell, over and over.
Until Mame begs her to stop. And she does that Yossy grin. That, “I am so awesomesauce” grin that makes me squee. XD
They misread the sign about taking off their shoes, despite Yossy loudly reciting, “RE-MUR-VU-SHI” and have to scurry out quickly.
Don’t worry. It’s all Mame’s fault.
They check in with Mikitty at this point, unsure where to go next.
Mame: not convinced at all.
Before they can get very far, Yossy very noisily tells her there’s no need to call.
I think Mikitty heard that.
She brightens at her silly nickname though. And Yossy’s tone is so adorable, who can help it?
She sounds so utterly convinced.
Then Yossy just hangs up on her and rushes Mame to the Japanese people she’s found.
Again, her tone of smug triumph here is just so Yossy and so unwarranted at this point.
She’s right because a little bit later Mame calls her with another issue: If they walk, it’s going to take them fifteen minutes to get out of the temple and get to their bus stop.
So Yossy wants to call a taxi.
Mikitty is silent for a moment and then blurts out:
Let me point out here that not only does Mame have to follow Yossy, no matter how ridiculous her plans are, but she has to attempt to dissuade these plans without breaking that delicate social balance of senpai/kouhai.
I’m not sure Yossy is even aware of the situation she’s put Mame into.
I also want to point out that Mame is carrying the bags too.
Just getting Mikitty in here to sum things up. She doesn’t have much else to do when people aren’t calling her.
Mame hangs up and briskly announces to Yossy that they’d better walk.
Y: “Come oooooon. No waaaaay!”
Note the ages and the fact that Mame has to patiently explain that they have a job to do.
And Yossy just keeps saying it’ll all be fine. Mame is not having it. They’re going to walk.
Finally she manages to get Yossy moving.
But since Yossy is kinda sulking, she has to lighten the tension by passing the buck a little bit.
M: “Yeah, that Mikitty is just taking it easy!”
LOVE the expression here.
Yossy: finding the right path by meditating. Mame can only laugh helplessly.
Yossy: “I know exactly where we’re going!”
Mame: “Fine, fine, let’s just get the hell out of here.”
Before they leave they’re allowed to feed the birds – which they hate, because hungry birds are scary.
WOOOOOOAAAAAA, THEY ALL MOVED!!!
Y: “God, WHEN WILL THEY STOP EATING!?”
Crazy bird keeper lady wants to keep them there forever.
The only thing they’ve agreed on so far.
When they get to the bus stop, Mame runs around to different people, using their ‘Useful English Phrases’, to find out which bus they need and when it arrives.
While Yossy takes a load off. I mean, she walked for like fifteen minutes.
She could’ve been sleeping!
With a half hour to wait-
Yossy’s next plan is to hang out. May as well!
They find an arcade and Yossy puts her on a Dance-Dance-Revolution machine (and still has her carry the bag).
Yossy: Nothin’ to hide here. She just loudly yells the dance instructions and totally ignores Mikitty.
Annnnnd now she’s sleeping again.
But on the bus, surely they’ll decide how they’re going to-
Ah. Nevermind then.
Can I just mention how gorgeous Yossy is? My WORD!!
Yossy wakes up randomly to exclaim that she sees the ocean and scares Mame half to death.
Since Yossy seems to be unable to wake up for more than a moment, Mame confers with the audience.
This time we’re going to do this right. We’re not going to get off track. We’ll get to the mall and get back to business.
And she’s awake again!
Yossy decides that Mikitty has the money. She’ll give them some if they run out.
Right? She wants Mame to call and ask.
So awkward. Mame’s tone at this point is so tired. She does not want to be asking this.
Because Mame already knows the answer.
Yossy then demands to know what Mikitty did about lunch.
Mame: very patiently explaining things (and still carrying everything).
They get bubble tea. Which Mame orders and pays for.
And again, I just want to point out both that Yossy is gorgeous and that I don’t think she knows what she’s doing. Rather than this playing out like bullying, it really just feels like Yossy doing whatever she wants without worrying about anything. Mame’s just
stuckwith it along for the ride. Mame is responsible. She remembers that they’re filming something and that they have a goal in mind. They need to get those souvenirs, for example.
So Yossy goes for these, uh, things. Which are kind-of quirky and cool, I guess.
But both attempts get stuck before they fall out. So Yossy has to try about six times (maybe more) to get these toys.
In one way, it’s a really cool idea. It’s an inexpensive, unique souvenir that they had to work to get. There’s a story attached to it. There was effort!
On the other hand, they’re only worth about $0.50 and it gives Yossy another excuse to play.
Mame is so very happy to see her food.
After their lunch-
It’s finally taxi time. Ok? Ok!
Man. Mame must have been so bored.
Meanwhile, in Team D’s taxi: Mikitty has just informed Takahashi and Mitsui that Team C is gaining on them!
Mame is busy trying to explain why they should have taken more buses and things because they’re going to run out of money before they get back, and they have to tip and-
Annnnd Yossy’s still not really awake.
Sure enough, there’s no more money and they now have to walk up the hill.
With Team D closing in!
It’s ok though. Yossy got a good nap in this time.
It’s not long before Team D drives by-
-And they don’t stop.
Team D: *evil laughter*
Mame knew this would happen. If they had just taken that other bus…
At the top of the hill they are greeted by Mikitty-
Mame: so happy to see someone other than Yossy.
Mikitty: “Come ere’ kittens! Mommy’s waiting!”
She makes the most adorable sound here.
M: “It was horrible…she kept saying ‘taxi’…and then the bag….and those damn birds-”
T: “There, there.”
The best moment is probably when they’re looking at the pictures they took and Yossy kinda wonders aloud why Mame was running around so much. There are a few pictures of her scurrying about.
Yossy can’t really argue with that.
Best. Team. Ever.
Go watch this. I ended my Alo–Hello week with Yossy’s adventure (and exercise in half-assery) because it was one of my favourite parts, but only one. You can see Shige and Winky climb Diamond Head, Koharu and Eri freaking out about bugs, Mitsui and Takahashi be super slo-mo and awkward and see Mikitty being everyone’s mom for a day. She really was the best choice for “base”.
Even if it was a bit lonely.
Hope you enjoyed this week. It was a lot of fun to revisit old favourites. I highly recommend any of them.
Anybody have any other suggestions for alo-hellos to watch?
Here’s hoping we’re in for sunshine soon.
But if not, there’s always dvds!
